Delaware Operations
The water and wastewater treatment operations firm, Delaware Operations, was established in July 2003, after residing under the Delaware Engineering umbrella for more than fifteen years. The design staff is a mix of formally trained engineers and hands-on technical professionals, all of whom are involved in water and wastewater treatment design projects from inception to plant start-up and debugging. It was from this "inception to start-up" perspective that the management of Delaware Engineering saw a great need to also provide plant operations expertise to our clients. Thus, the plant operations sector began to operate facilities designed by the Delaware engineers, and provide feedback on the design from an operator's perspective. This interaction makes for better design engineers, and provides a positive outlet for the experienced operators. The marriage of the two units was very successful; the operations unit outgrew its support status, and finally became its own company. James Suozzo acts as President of Delaware Operations. Currently, twenty-six certified water and wastewater operators comprise the technical staff of Delaware Operations. They are on duty 365 days/year at such plants as the Stamford WWTP and WTP, Bloomville WTP, Andes WWTP and WTP, Walton WWTP, DMV WWTP, Fleischmanns WWTP, Hunter Highlands WWTP, Hunter WWTP, Windham WWTP and Mountainside Farms WWTP. The Fleischmanns, Hunter, and Windham facilities replaced antiquated on-site septic systems in these three villages within the New York City Watershed, a 2000-sq. mile upstate watershed which supplies unfiltered drinking water to the 9 million residents of downstate New York. The Operations and Technical Staff have also assisted in the start-up of various other facilities, such as the 7 MGD Glens Falls WTP, the Village of Delhi WWTP, the Cooperstown WWTP and WTP, and Seven Springs WWTP. The Technical Staff has set up and ran various pilot studies (Sand Filter, Micro-filtration, Phosphorus removal) to assist engineering in the design of new facilities as well as facilities upgrades and is available to address operational issues as needed. The expertise of the Delaware staff lies in their ability to operate state-of-the-art treatment facilities, capable of providing tertiary wastewater treatment achieving drinking water quality effluent relative to turbidity and pathogen removal. The New York City Watershed and its wastewater treatment improvement program have spurred on a new class of operations professionals. Delaware Operations is at the forefront of that class, and has set and maintained a new higher standard of professional operators.
